Cambodia’s do-it-yourself railway

American bombing followed by the depraved policies of the Khmer Rouge destroyed Cambodia’s infrastructure and killed many of its people. The ravages of war left the roads mined and railway locomotives destroyed. The Cambodians are nothing if not resourceful and thanks to the ‘Norry’ – a do-it-yourself platelayers’ trolley built from tank parts and bamboo – its metre gauge railways have made a most remarkable, and completely unofficial, comeback.

Perhaps a similar vehicle – built to carry tourists rather than agricultural goods – could help to save Poland’s disused narrow gauge railways?
