The osobowy train. Still from You Tube video.

Tourists occasionally travel by ekspres train in Poland. The more adventurous venture onto the slower – but much cheaper – pospieszny trains. Only a dedicated few brave the osobowy EN57 electric multiple units which have handled most of Poland’s local train traffic for nearly 50 years. This is what the rest of you are missing. Many thanks to ‘Pasazer’ for providing the link.

Yep, that about sums them up. Boneshakers from Poznan to Leszno I can just about handle, but I passed up on a Poznan to Wroclaw all stations. I couldn’t cope with all that, now what IS the word? Excitement…..no, Boredom, yes thats it, boredom. Stopping at every lampost and corner shop. I didn’t realise they were that old though, I thought they were 1970s stock.

I remember travelling from Zakopane to Chabowka one January in deep snow. The EN57 had been stabled in Zakopane station overnight in temperatures of -20 to -30 and was absolutely freezing. The windows were frozen up completely and didn’t fit very well. It was very draughty and we were dusted with powdered snow for the whole journey as the train bumped and rattled along the frozen track. It seemed to take hours as we battled through the drifting snow. It was an unforgettable experience!
